David Thomas Barnard was born in The Leys, Chipping Norton in 1884 to parents David and Mary Barnard. He had served for three years in the Volunteer Battalion of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light infantry. He married Rosina Pratt in th etown in 1909 and moved to Peckham whwre he worked as a furniture salesman. They had two daughters May and Violet. He enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery on 4th December 1915 and joined 144th Seige Battery in France on 1st May 1917. His family moved back to Chipping Norton at this time. On 3rd October 1917 he was wounded in action and evacuated to the 2nd CanadianGeneral Hospital at Le Treport. His right leg was amputated after gas gangerene had set in and he died on 3rd October 1917 aged 33.
