The Rly having been broken beyond VLAMERTINGHE marched the remaining distance to GOLDFISH CHATEAU & were met by an officer from YPRES who reported a Gas attack which had been severe even in YPRES it being sufficiently strong even where we were to slightly affect the eyes. The officer bought orders that the Batn. was to be distributed in the various dugouts and trenches around GOLDFISH CHATEAU (H.11.12) one company to go to the KAAIE Salient at end of Canal. C Company detached for this & on their arrival they were sent to relieve A Company at MENIN Gate of YPRES. Considerable shelling during the morning - but only casualties were due to a direct hit on a “French” dugout where a shell pierced 5 feet of earth & timber and buried several men (4 being killed by the debris and not by the shell) The morning very fine & clear practically no wind and . . .
