Alfred Hood was born on January 26 1895 in Sutton Howgrave, Ripon, North Yorkshire. The son of a railway platelayer. He had 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He was 10th Batallion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). He died on the 1st July 1916 aged 21, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest military battles in history. His body was never found but he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial in France. Private 23924
