Born in Iron Bridge, Shropshire c1887, Horatio joined the Army in 1915 and was posted to 3rd Battalion, South Wales Borderers (SWB) in Brecon. On completion of training he was allocated to 10th Battalion, and arrived in Le Havre, France, with them on 3/4 December 1915, part of 38th (Welsh) Division. In, probably, the latter part of 1916 he was sent to Salonika and joined 7th Battalion, SWB. He was killed in action on the 17th September 1918. Horatio is buried in DOIRAN Military Cemetery, Greece (Grave VI.E.22). He is also remembered on the Tirphil Roll of Honour, and the SWB Roll of Honour.

A newspaper article in 1918, written after his death, there is mention that Horatio was 'gassed in 1916', and whilst in hospital recovering from this he was presented with the Military Medal. The London Gazette entry can be found in issue 29608, page5590, dated 2 June 1916: 0/21069 Pte. H. E. Evans, 10th Bn., S.Wales Bord. This was awarded for action whilst serving in France. nce.
