William Thomas Hughes was born 14/12/1888 at 21 Albert Street, Watford Herts. to Thomas Hughes and Matilda Phoebe Hughes (nee Langley). In 1911 he was living in the Edgware Road, St. Marylebone, London and working as a grocer's assistant. He was married on 23/03/1913 at St. Matthews Marylebone to Edith Mary Elizabeth Piggins. In 1914 he enlisted into The Royal Sussex Regiment in Hampstead , London; and carried out basic training In Bexhill Sussex. As Private SD5812, (a "Southdowner")he was then transported to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. initially serving in the 14th Battalion, then the 13th and finally the 12th battalion. He became an acting Corporal and was Killed in Action on the 12th October 1916 at Auchonvillers during the Battle of the Ancre Heights. He is buried in the Euston Road Cemetery nr. Colincamps France plot 3 row O grave 5. During our "Lights Out" hour of reflection between 10pm and 11 pm on Monday 4th August 2014 (prior to the start of hostilities a century ago), we will, as always, remember you and all your comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of liberty.
