Alan Moray Brown belonged to the 160,000-strong, trained, British Indian army. His company was sent to Marseilles first to support the BEF which had recently been forced to retreat from Mons by the Germans. During the battle of Neuve-Chapelle he was hit by a shell, wounded and then died.
