Rhys Henry Williams volunteered with his pals from the village of Crynant in South Wales. He died of wounds in the Battle of Mametz Wood on 10th July 1916. Letters and a silk sent from the Front survive. His loss was much grieved over by his family. A loving tribute to him written in Welsh verse entitled 'Ymson Hiraeth am Rhys Henry Williams' was published in a local paper in May 1917 by a poet friend Dewi Glan Dulais.
