John was known as Jack in the family. He was but a name in a letter from my grandfather to my grandmother from 29th General Hospital in Salonika written 25 May 1917. Report had been received of Jacks` possible death and my grandfather asked anyone who came into the hospital if they knew Jack and found someone who had seen the incident of a confrontation with a "Bulgar" when Jack went into a trench and was not seen again. My grandfathers``sister was married to Jack's brother.
Jack was born 1887 in Okehampton, Devon to John and Sarah and worked as a Railway Platelayer before the war. He married Maud Louisa Turner about 1905. and they had 2 children Marjorie and Gladys. He first went to France in October 1915 and lost his life in Salonika and has no known grave.
