Ernest was born on 7th May 1895 in Hulme, Manchester were he lived with his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He had worked for Belsize Motors Limited before joining the County Palatine Royal Field Artillery in 1914. In 1916 he was attached to a trench mortar battery and on 1st July he with several others had finished firing for the day and they had taken refuge in an ammunition dug-out when a shell came in and he was killed instantly.
