Walter James Cowie was born in Windsor around October 1892. He was the second son of John and Emily Jane Cowie.  His elder brother Alan John (Sherwood Foresters) and his younger brother Leonard (Gordon Highlanders) also served in the First World War and both survived. Walter was following in the footsteps of his father and elder brother working as a domestic gardener. Hewas wounded whilst serving with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and died on 23rd August 1916, aged 23 and is buried in La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie.
