Ernest joined the Royal Sussex on 21st October 1915, 6 days after his 16th birthday. He arrived in France on 1st April 1916.

On 27th April 1916 his platoon relieved another on the front line, while awaiting orders a rifle grenade was fired into the trench inflicting fatal wounds, he died at 08:30am.
