Walter  ran away from home and joined underage. The Regiment probably knew he was too young so gave hime the roll of drummer, and therefore attached to the HQ as a messenger. Died of his wounds two days after the HQ was hit by artillery fire so one can assume it was this that did for him. My father, his nephew, Robert Walter named after him.
