Samuel was born 10 April 1890 in Ballymacarett (later East Belfast), County Down, Ireland (later Northern Ireland). He died in the days leading up to The Battle of The Somme, France and was buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery, France. Samuel was survived by his wife Mary McIlwrath Cull and three year old daughter Mary Geraldine. He is also survived by his father James Cull and Mother Margaret Jane Hughes Cull; two older brothers, John Edward and Thomas, a twin brother Stafford and six younger siblings: James Herbert, Sarah Ann, David Dorrington, Margaret Jane, Kathleen Joan and Grace Elizabeth. James Herbert died a year after Samuel, 16 August 1817, at the Battle of Langemarck, Third Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, while serving with the 14th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles (Young Civilian Volunteers), 109the Brigade, 36th Ulster Division.
