Arthur's dad was a baker, and also a gambler. The 3 boys worked in the bakery, and had to get up very early.  I was told other family members had to help out when there was no money. One of his brother's (who later emigrated to the USA), blamed his father for the fact that Arthur joined up - since he was trying to flee a terrible home-life. This information came from Sylvia Showers nee Dimond who lives in USA. It is sad to think he had a terrible life, and that it was ended in such a terrible way.
