This man has made an impression upon me which I would like to honour as he was clearly much loved and very much missed by my grandmother Martha Brown nee Raine. I first became aware of Jack (John Claude) Raine one remembrance Sunday in the early 1960's (62 or 63) when I was staying at Martha's wonderful house in East Hagbourne. We had fired up the range, fed the chickens, geese and taken Mr Johns some milk for his breakfast. He was a very interesting man who lived in grandma's orchard but that is another story. After breakfast Grandma went to watch the small black & white TV for the November 11 Act of National Rememberance and I sat with her. I had never seen this powerful and wise woman cry before and her tears silently flowed. When I asked her what was wrong she told me she missed her brother very much and she just didn't understand why it was necessary for so many people to have died. That question remains unanswered and so many have died since and will have done today for reasons that still remain a complete and thouroughly fecked up mystery to me, my late parents, grandparents and so many others who loose people to war. I wish I knew you Uncle Jack
