Fred Morgan - Killed in action 2nd May 1915

Very little is known about Private Fred Morgan other than that he served in the Cheshire Regiment and was residing in Irlam at the time. His name and photograph appear in the 1917 Official Record and Roll of Honour which was produced by Joseph Cooke and his name is recorded on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial. There is only one casualty called Frederick Morgan from the Cheshire Regiment therefore he is probably, but not conclusively, the following soldier:

Private Frederick Morgan (Service no. 1162) served with the 4th Battalion, The Cheshire Regiment (attached to the 5th Battalion).

The Morgan family originated from Cardiff, South Wales and moved to 217 Peel Street, Rock Ferry, Tranmere, Birkenhead sometime before 1901. Frederick Palmer Morgan was born in 1894 in Cardiff. The family consisted of his mother, Mrs Alice Morgan (born 1866), Clifford T. Morgan (1899), Edward Percival Morgan (1891), Harry T. Morgan (1887) and Florence Maud Rowe (1881).

Fred arrived in France on 14th February 1915. He was killed in action three months later on 2nd May 1915 at the age of 22. He is buried in Spoilbank Cemetery (near Ypres), Belgium.
