I only know of Commander Coates because of the sketchbooks he kept while he commnanded the CLACTON and other vessels. He was in charge of the CLACTON at Gallipoli and later died whil on board the HMS REDBREAST in 1917. An author of books on trade in the Indian Ocean, he seemed to be a talented and knowledgeable man.
See http://mysticseaportcollections.blogspot.com/2015/04/remembering-gallipoli.html for one of his drawings at Gallipoli.
