My grandfather Lance Corporal William George Syme Sinclair died during the third battle of Ypres ( Passchendaele ) on the 21st September 1917 while serving with "B" company 9th Battalion of the Royal Scots. He left behind his widow Elizabeth and my father William ( Bill )who was then aged one year two months. My grandmother did a sterling job of raising my father single-handedly with great support from her siblings. My grandmother and father always thought my grandfather's name was commemorated on the Menin Gate but were never able to travel to ascertain this. On visiting Ypres with my own family in August 1982 we could not find the name and my father died very shortly after. On researching my grandfather's name however with the Commonwealth Graves Commission some years later we discovered that he was commemorated at Tyne Cot cemetery and although too late for my father, my husband and I were fortunate enough to be able to visit and pay tribute to his sacrifice in person.. We also went back some years later with my mother and we all found this very moving. His name will never be forgotten in our family.
