Thomas was a coal miner from Heage in Derbyshire. He was married and had three children. He served in the Balkans and France. Thomas was allowed home on compassionate leave when his wife died; then he returned to the front. He was awarded the British, Victory and Star medals. Thomas does not have a grave, but is remembered on a memorial panel at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belguim and on the war memorial in the churchyard at Heage.
