5575 Lance Corporal John Thomas Doherty, born Shepparton, Vic., Australia, of the 24th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement.  Enlisted on the 17th February 1916 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 25th September 1916.

He died age 32, the husband of Eva May Doherty of 17 Knight Street, Shepparton, Victoria.  The son of Henry and Mary Ann Isabell Doherty.

"DOHERTY.-Killed in action somewhere in France, on 4th October, Lance-Corporal J. T., loving husband of Eva May, and father of Willis, Myrtle, and Violet Elaine, of Shepparton; and loving brother of Mrs. H. Little (Pakenham), Mrs. T. Sherry (Ardmona), Mrs. W. Scott (Pine Lodge), Jessie, Harry, Will, Ted, Eddie, of Shep- parton; Gus, Garfield; and Dick (on active service).

We pictured his safe returning,

And longed for the clasp of his hand, But God has postponed our meeting-We will meet in a better land.

Somewhere in France he is sleeping,

He answered duty's call;

He died an Australian hero-

It's the bravest death of all.

His duty nobly done.
