Born in Haltwhistle in 1891, Jeannie Smith Lee was my great aunt. In 1915 she joined the 30th Northumberland Detachment as a VAD and completed nursing training at Armstrong College Newcastle. She served at BEF 9th General Hospital Rouen from late 1916 until her death from infection 30 March 1917 aged25. Her letters are full of compassion and humour and she remians forever young and remembered with love and admiration.  .
