Captain John Richmond Cowles as he was in 1916 was awarded the Military Cross "For conspicuous gallantry when leading a raid on the enemy's trenches. 33 of the enemy were killed and useful identifications secured, mainly owing to his skill and resource. Only seven of his men were wounded".
Major J. R. Cowles MC, assumed temporary command of 4th Battalion, NZRB, was killed in the field on 25 November 1917 when he and a runner went out to check on some night work. He was buried with military honours at The Huts Cemetery in Dickenbusch, Belgium.
