Music was Samuel's hobby and he played the euphonium in a local orchestra. After his brother was killed in a mining accident, Samuel left his job as a miner and worked for Messrs Eden and Sons, The Hermitage from where he enlisted during September 1914. On the night of 4/5th August 1917 whilst taking part in a raid on the enemy trenches, Sam was between the German front line and the enemies barbed wire when he was hit in the head by either a bullet or a piece of shell. With his death his parents had lost six sons out of seven , four to disease and one in the mines.
