Uncle George James Chaney, known in the family as 'Steve' joined the Army,Tower of London Company,City of London battalion,Royal Fusiliers. Killed by shall fire on July 31st, my father's birthday.My father never celebrated his birthday, because of the death of his beloved brother' Steve'. He has no known grave, but I have tried to find where he may be, as I know that there was a survivor,Private Lowe, who wrote to my granny about the event.he said he took cigarettes from the pockets of 'our dead boys, black in the face and dead' - so my uncle must be somewhere,and I will go on trying to find him until I die.. My heroic Uncle 'Steve', Daddy never forgot , nor will I - I have two heroes to remember, two uncles who I never met, but who I always felt I knew.God bless them, and all the other heroes. Sylvia
