Unfortunately, I know very little about my great uncle but I do know that my grandfather, his brother, joined up in the hope it would spare his beloved younger brother.  Alfred joined up despite this and was killed in action on 01/10/1917, aged 20.  Unsurprisingly, my grandfather named his first born son, Alfred, in memory of his brother.
