I am sorry that I do not know your Christian name. I am not aware of the precise circumstances of your death, but, as a former soldier in the 1st Lincolns myself, doing my National Service in 1950, I am pleased to be given this opportunity to salute you as a brave young soldier who lost his life in the fighting on the 23rd of October 1918 in the service of his country. We read that the county battalions of the 21st Division, of which the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment was one of the units, took part in the fighting “which went on fiercely until the close of day”. Your funeral took place at Vendegies-au-Bois British Cemetery, where 12 other members of our regiment who died on the same day that you did, were also buried. I trust that the Guard of Honour from the 21st Division at your graveside fired the traditional salute to a fallen comrade. In addition to your gravestone at Vendegies, I also trust that you were commemorated on your home town war memorial. My sympathy to your father and to other relatives who mourned your sacrifice.  Rest in Peace.  Harry.
