Reginald was born in 1900 the eldest child of 7 of Ernest Garwood and Minnie Mary (nee Peachment) He enlisted in the Royal Navy on the 31st May 1915. He was assigned to HMS Impregnable which was a training ship in Portsmouth as a boy bugler. By August he had been promoted to boy level 2, and by September he was serving on the King Alfred, a Drake class armoured cruiser. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman, on the same ship, in April 1917. The ship was part of the 9th cruiser squadron patrolling the Atlantic. Between 7th August and  the 11th September 1917 he was stationed at HMS Pembroke, which was a barracks in Chatham. He was probably there when a German bomber dropped 2 bombs over the naval barracks on the 3rd September . 130 ratings died that night. He was then stationed on HMS Strongbow from the 12th September. This ship was lost on the 17th September 1917 along with the Mary Rose. They were both escorting a Scandinavian convoy when they were attacked by 2 german minelaying cruisers, the Bremse and the Brumner. Reginald died that day, aged only 18 and he is commeraorated at the memorial in Chatham
