Herbert Cresswell was 17 years of age when he enlisted during July 1915 with the 2/5th Sherwood Foresters. He was sent to France in March 1916 and was at first thought to have been taken prisoner but his identity disc was returned from the battlefield proving he was killed in action.  Prior to enlisting he worked at Ormonde Colliery.
