David served as a Private in the Hertfordshire Regiment and came from Keysoe in Bedfordshire where many of his relatives lived, and still live, and some are buried at the Keysoe churchyard, including his sister, Amy Stapleton, who was my maternal grandmother. David was killed, aged 23, in the last major battle of the War, at the River Sambre, along with other compatriots in his Regiment just one week before the Armistice. They are buried together at the small British War Graves Commission cemetery at Ghissignies in Flanders. May David and his comrades in arms rest in eternal peace and that there is never another "war to end all wars"
