George, You had barely arrived on the Western Front with your battalion, the 2nd Scots Guards, and had occupied your front line trenches for the first time, when you were subjected to a ferocious artillery barrage from the enemy near Kruseik on the morning of the 26th. You and so many of your comrades were killed when the trenches collapsed on top of you. Your remains were not recovered from the field of battle, which is why you are commemorated on the Menin Gate. You did not stand a chance, and I salute you as a brave soldier who died in the service of his country. My sympathy to your widow and parents who mourned your sacrifice.Rest in Peace. Harry
