Fredrick James Byrne was born near the town of Clifton Hill in the state of Victoria. A wicker worker by trade he joined the Australian Infantry at the end of January 1916 at the age of 23 yrs 10 mths. He served first with the 5th Battalion 16th Riffles in Africa and later with the 58th Battalion in France. He was wounded in action in March 1917. He was promoted to Corporal with the 58th Battalion in June 1917. He was later sent to Tidworth and then Aldershot where he met and married his sweetheart before returning to France in January 1918.

He was aged 26 when he was killed by a sniper while out on patrol.
