William, when I read your unit history it was the first time I, as a peacetime former soldier, realised what you all had to put up with at Poperinghe in 1917 when firing the heavy howitzers. My uncle, who served alongside you at this time in 154 Siege Battery, would never talk to his family about his military service, and I now understand why. I guess he would have attended the funeral service of you and your eight comrades who were all killed in the dugout you were sharing when an an enemy shell landed on it. I salute you as a brave soldier who died in the service of his country. You would have had a Guard of Honour at your funeral, who would have fired the traditional salute to fallen comrades. My sympathy to your relatives who mourned your sacrifice. Rest in Peace. Harry.
