Thomas Horatio Alfred Leigh was a professional solider, and had served in the Camel Corps before transferring to the Coldstream Guards at the outbreak of the War. He was posted to France at the end of August 2014 and died on or about 14th September 2014. He and the battalion which he was posted to were caught in crossfire between British and German artillery and it is believed they died due to British artillery fire. The Press reports spoke of 'German white flag treachery' but this seems more likely to be propaganda of the time. Poignantly, it is possible that some of Horatio's own cousins were serving with the German forces at the battle, as one branch of the family had emigrated to this region in the late 19th century to work for the German pottery manufacutrers.
