Captain Francis Thomas Burrough, Shropshire Light Infantry 6th Battalion, was born in Clun, Shropshire on 26th October 1879 and is registered in Clun in the 1881 Census. One of twelve childre (eleven boys and a girl), his family then moved to Herefordshire, where his father was the rector of Eaton Bishop for 25 years. 

Francis travelled to Australia in 1900 where he married Naomi Rose Kaeppel in 1904. Records  indicate that he fought in the Boer War and was a prisoner in 1901, but that he was released. 

Francis and Naomi had a daughter called Thelma Rose Burrough, who was born in Somerset in 1906. The family were recorded as living in Wemore, Somerset in the 1911 census. 

Francis was killed in action on the 1st July 1916 aged 36. His memorial stone is in the Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Ieper. West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His wife is described as living in Pretoria and he is referenced on the South African Roll of Honour 1914 - 1918.
