Born in 1894, he was the sixth child of Walter and Elizabeth Jackson of York. In 1911, at the age of 17, he lived at 8 Nunnery Lane with his parents and eight of his twelve brothers and sisters. He was employed as a clerk to an accountant.

A year after his death his older brother Stanley was killed in the raid on Zeebrugge.
