Extract from letter sent to Arthur's Parents by his Commanding Officer:-

"Be brave Mrs. Spencer.  Your boy was killed yesterday during one of the heaviest bombardments we have had for some considerable time.  He was sitting in his dug-out sheltering from shrapnel and whizz bangs, when a very high explosive shell struck their dug-out, killing Arthur instantly, part of the shell also striking him."
