On September 18th, 1917, SS Aigwen (ex-Joseph Chamberlain), a British steamer was on a supply voyage from Archangel, Russia to Dieppe was sunk by the German submarine UB-62 (Bernhard Putzier) 50 miles off the northern coast of Scotland. Felix Cavanagh was a fireman (stoker) on the steamer and was one of eighteen souls lost at sea.

He was survived by a wife Mary and son Timothy. Tim Cavanagh fought in the Burma campaign in Second World War and returned home and was the father of two sons John and Frank. There are now multiple generations which carry his name and he will always be remembered alongside those lost in all conflicts.
