John was the 3rd child  (of 6) of William Burdon Hunter and Harriet (nee Broadwood) born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1895

He enlisted on 31st Jan 1916 in the Machine Gun Corps of the 28th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusilliers. Joined at Harrogate.  No. 35291

Spent 12 days in hospital  (1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne) 21 Sept 1917-3 Oct 1917 due to  Impetigo.

Served in France from 18 June 1916 until 21 Mar 1918. Was a Lance Corporal but at own request was demoted to Private on 21 Jan 1918 ( Note says that he was not exempt from a court marshall )

On the 21st March 1918 he was reported missing in the field.
