Charles Whittaker (known as Charlie) was the fourth of ten children born to Herbert and Fanny Whittaker. They were a farming family, renting from Trinity College Cambridge one of three cottages grouped together and now know as ‘Cottage Farm’ on Main Street. Charlie was still at school when the war broke out. He was killed by a shell in France on 18 October 1918, having been there less than a month. He was the second son of this family to have been killed in action, his oldest brother John dying in 1916. Another older brother Thorpe served and returned with the Victory and British medals, and the 15 Star.
