Lieutenant Alfred Maynard, who played in the scrum at hooker, ENGLAND RUGBY TEAM, died on the first day of the Battle of the Ancre in France in November 1916, the final large British attack of the bloody Battle of the Somme. He had earlier survived being shot in the leg at Gallipoli.
