Walter was the fifth of six sons born to Charles and Selina Stone. They had also had a daughter Florence, second born, who had died aged two.

Walter was the only son to die in the war. The page of the family bible which records the births of all seven children is written in the same hand, presumably Selina's The page marking the deaths sees this same handwriting scribe "Walter Henry Stone. Shelled in France September 3rd 1916 at Beaumont Hamil"

Walter was 28 years old.
