Born:2ndApril 1899 at 2 Treforda Cottages, Boscastle, North Cornwall, England.Died:20th September1918 Rouen France. Buried:St. Sever Cemetary Extension, Rouen.Charles like his older brothers was born and raised in the village where he attended the village school. Not much is known about Charles’s early life although we do know that he worked for B.W. Couch, Bridge House, Boscastle and then for Mr Jones of Trevalga, what his occupation was we do not know. At the outbreak of war he joined the Somerset Light Infrantry and was a stretcher bearer. He was injured at the Western Front after being in France for some 8 months and taken to No. 12 General Hospital, Rouen suffering gun-shot wounds. His parents were given permission to travel to see him in hospital, where they found him to be seriously wounded but conscious, they returned home believing him to be on the road to recovery but on their return was officially informed that he had taken a turn for the worse and in fact had passed away. He was 19 years old at the time of his death and is buried in the War cemetary in Rouen France. His obituary stated that Charles was “of a very cheerful disposition and was a great favourite with his companions”.
