My great uncle emigrated from Parracombe, North Devon, to Australia before the War and enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia on the 10th September 1914. He was sent to Gallipoli and wounded during the action in the Dardenelles. He was then stationed in Egypt and in June 1916 went to join the troops on the Somme. On the 18th August 1916 he was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant on the same day reflecting the heavy losses sustained. Sadly he was killed on the 3rd September 1916 at the age of 34.
