Thomas Standing was my great-grandfather and went to war despite being over the age of requirement.  He died on the Somme and my grandmother's life was changed for ever.  Not only did she lose her beloved father but at 14 she had to give up school, and her dreams of being a teacher, to work in the cottonmills of Preston.  She never really got over his death and mourned him till her dying day.
