William was my uncle and my mother's favourite brother.  I have a postcard showing him with his platoon at Aldershot dated 25/7/15 addressed to my mother saying he was "going that Sunday".  Exactly two months later he was killed.  My wife and I have visited the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France and read his name together with numerous Barnstaple comrades.  They all have no known graves.
