Oldham Chronicle, 14th August 1917, states:
KILLED
PRIVATE THOMAS DAVIES, Shaw
Private Thomas Davies, of the Grenadier Guards, whose home is at 50 Kershaw-street, Shaw, died on the 1st inst. of wounds received in action on the previous day. He was 28 years of age and leaves a widow and two children. He was a packer at the Ash Mill prior to his enlistment in September last. A letter form Davies lieutenant to his widow says: “Your husband was going into the great attack when he was hit by a shell. I was close to him at the time and can assure you that everything possible was done for him at once, and I don’t think he suffered any pain. I have been his platoon commander since he came out. He has always done his work cheerfully and well and I and all his comrades in the platoon will miss him very much.”
