Thomas was born in 1889, in Droylsden, Lancashire.
In 1891, at the age of 2, he is living with his widower father, also called Thomas (30) a masons labourer, from Montgomery, Montgomeryshire (Wales) and his younger brother Harold (11 months). The 1891 census lists Mary Broomhead (30) of Calves, Derbyshire, as a servant at the house. The house was at 22 Golden Street, Crompton.
By 1901, his father has married Mary Broomhead and he has then died (1899) also, leaving our Thomas, aged 12, as the only worker (a cotton bleacher) in the household. He lives with his mother-in-law Mary (40), his brother Harold (10) and his half brother and sisters, Walter (6), Nellie (9), Emily (5) and Minnie (2). The family were still living at Golden Street.
In 1913, Thomas married Annie Isabel Pearson at St. Pauls Methodist Chapel, Oldham.
Thomas enlisted in Shaw, in the Grenadier Guards, no. 26665.
