876 of 876 325700 Pte John Edward Payne 1st Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment Died 24th May 1921 age 33 Son of Charles and Everett Payne of March, Cambridgeshire and husband to Florence May Payne nee Sutton of Toll House, Rings End, Wisbech. Florence and John married in1912 at Wisbech John had two brothers and three sisters Mark, Alice, Rose, Arthur and Lily He was born in North Witchford in 1888 In 1911 he was boarding at Norwood Side, March and was working as a painter on the railways Pte Payne enlisted on 4th September 1914 and was discharged on 21st February 1917. He was awarded the Silver War Badge after the war and because of his injuries became an Army Pensioner. John was also awarded the British, Victory and 15 Star Medals John died at home at Toll House, Rings End on 24th May 1921 because of being gassed on active service in 1917 and Phthisis which is shrinkage of the eyeball due to the damage caused by being gassed. His mother in law Susannah Sutton was present at the death she lived at 2 Railway Cottages, Rings End, Wisbech Pte John Edward Payne is remembered with honour at Guyhirn Old Churchyard
